Thanks to the implementation of the project "Restoration of Ecosystems to Prevent Marine Pollution" (RE-MAP), the management of agricultural land in the Dniester River basin will be improved. RE-MAP will allow for the restoration of degraded agricultural lands, prevent their pollution from land-based sources, and enhance biodiversity and soil resilience to climate change.
The implementation of the project includes a range of measures, such as the rehabilitation of forest ecosystems on 1,700 hectares of state land and 500 hectares of community land, the protection of riverbeds and wetlands over an area of 500 hectares, and the development of agroforestry systems and pastures over an area of 10,000 hectares, including a pilot project of 100 hectares.
In addition to ecological benefits, the project will contribute to combating soil erosion and increasing agricultural land productivity. Special attention will be given to reforestation along rivers and the creation of protective forest belts.
Work will be carried out in 15 districts of the country. In the districts of Ocnița, Dondușeni, Drochia, Soroca, Florești, Șoldănești, Rezina, Telenești, Orhei, Criuleni, Ialoveni, Anenii Noi, Dubăsari, Căușeni, and Ștefan Vodă, measures will be taken to protect soils and afforestation with the active participation of local communities.
Thus, during the project presentation, the mayor of the village of Sălcuta in the Căușeni district, Liliana Bacal, spoke about plans to plant a forest along the banks of the Putna River and improve the soil condition on a large area of agricultural land.
The project will be financed by a grant of $7.9 million provided by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) with the support of the Global Environment Facility.
The IBRD is the main lending institution of the World Bank Group, providing loans and guarantees to combat poverty and stimulate sustainable growth. The implementation of the ecosystem restoration project in the Dniester River basin will be managed by the National Environmental Projects Implementation Agency.
